For hundreds of years, salt hauliers were directing the fate of salt mining affaires. Trading with salt made them rich men. A writing tool for the drafting of a contract or for a dynamic signature was always necessary; therefore, one could always be found in the offing on their desks.

During renovation works on the salt mountain in 2007, exactly 400 hundred years after the completion of the brine pipeline in 1607, some brine pipes were saved. From these old pipes the ballpoint in the illustration was spindle turned.

The simple spruce wood, from which the pipes were made, is well preserved. Discolorations or little fissures in a wood of this age and rarity are a normal occurrence.

In the autumn of 2007 the wood was cut into square blocks, the end grain sealed with wax, and finally seasoned for 6 months. After the completion of this process, the wood was impregnated with oil. The turning and shaping is done freehand on the lathe; as a consequence, each item produced is unique.
