Hallstatt, in Salzkammergut Upper Austria, is one of the most important archaeological sites of the `old world´. An entire cultural era was named after this location, the `Hallstatt-Time´. In 1997 Hallstatt was instated as a world heritage site by UNESCO. The salt is mainly responsible for this. For over 7000 years the `white gold´ has been tying humans to this place and has deeply influenced the course of its changeable history. A segment of this history is explored in this splendidly illustrated book.

It refers to the origins of salt mining in Hallstatt, prehistoric mines, the famous burial site from the early European Iron Age, the lives of prehistoric miners and the very beginnings of research work around Hallstatt and its first pioneers, like Johann Georg Ramsauer, the famous salt mining director.

For decades the Viennese Natural History Museum, sponsored by Saline corp., has been making extensive research in this incredible cultural landscape. The latest research updates are vividly and captivatingly presented. Numerous scientists from archaeology, botany, dendrochronology, experimental archaeology, geology, parasitology to textiles research and zoology present their sensational methods and results.

This book tells a story about the fascination and uniqueness of the archaeological heritage of Hallstatt
